Although the overall renovation project has ended I could not bare the thought of ending the blog. So, until I come up with some extra cash to renovate another property I will continue posting but it will not be about the day-to-day trials and tribulations of an active renovation but about lessons learned over the course of this renovation. My future posts will be about understanding foreclosures in Florida, do’s and don’ts of renovating from a distance, how to choose a contractor, what will end up costing you a ton of money if you are not careful and tips on how to save money when renovating a property. More to come!

Prior to deciding on a contractor we followed some tried and trusted sources that helped us find the "right" contractor to get the job done.
Some tips for finding a contractor:
1. Get a referral. Since we are not from Fort Myers we asked our real estate agent for a referral. I also contacted the Southwest Florida Real Estate Investment Group for referrals. Bottom line, shop around.
2. Get at least three bids.
3. Check to make sure they are licensed.
4. Check the Better Business Bureau to make sure there are no compliants against them.
5. Meet the contractor in person.
6. Check references.
7. Go with your gut, if it doesn't feel right don't hire them.Do you have any tips for finding the "right" contractor?
